Helmholtz Launches New Strategic Unit for Security and Resilience Research
Following its approval by the Helmholtz Association's General Assembly in April, the Strategic Unit Security and Resilience Research has been established to strengthen the Association's activities in security and resilience research. Reporting directly to the President, the new strategic unit is jointly led by Andrea Frahm and Nicolas Tellner, who assume these responsibilities in addition to their existing roles within the Helmholtz Association.
Within the new unit,Andrea Frahm is responsible for Stakeholder Engagement and Business Development. She contributes extensive international experience and deep expertise in building strategic innovation partnerships. Drawing on successful international innovation models—including those of DARPA and MAFAT—the unit plans to adapt proven approaches for the Helmholtz Association, supporting the centers in developing new partnerships, innovation pathways and collaborative initiatives.
Nicolas Tellner is responsible for Research Projects, Policy and Research Security. With his extensive expertise in research strategy and his experience in collaborating with security authorities, he will play a key role in shaping the strategic development of security-relevant research activities.
"Security and resilience have become defining priorities for science, innovation and society. With this new strategic unit, we are creating a structure that connects existing expertise across the Helmholtz Association, strengthens collaboration, and, together with our research centers, generates new momentum for research, innovation and strategic partnerships," said Helmholtz President Martin Keller.
The Strategic Unit has already commenced its work and will collaborate closely with Helmholtz's 18 research centers and relevant cross-cutting units across the Association. By combining scientific excellence with international best practices, strategic partnerships, and the innovation-driven transfer of research into application, the unit will help strengthen Helmholtz's contribution to addressing current and future security and resilience challenges.
