Security and Resilience Research
Through our research, we’re working to better prepare our society for the challenges of today and tomorrow.
Geopolitical tensions, new technologies and global crises are changing the security and resilience-related demands placed on our society. Our research generates knowledge and advances technologies that help to protect people, critical infrastructure and the government’s ability to act more effectively. Our findings clarify risks and open up new avenues for action. Furthermore, many innovations originally developed for security-related applications go on to strengthen the economy and society.
Helmholtz brings together the expertise of its 18 centers, combining excellent research with strong partnerships. In collaboration with the scientific community, policymakers, the business sector and other stakeholders, we develop solutions that enhance the resilience of Germany and Europe alike. We pursue an interdisciplinary approach to security and resilience research. From cybersecurity and artificial intelligence to energy and health research and quantum technologies and resilient supply systems, we combine scientific excellence with social responsibility. Our goal is to generate insights that provide guidance and enable innovation for a secure and resilient future.
At Helmholtz, security research and research security are not approached separately. We appropriately protect knowledge, data, technologies and infrastructure without losing sight of the need for international collaboration and open scientific exchange. Our aim is to capitalize responsibly on opportunities for international collaboration, identify risks early on, and design research that remains trustworthy, resilient and capable of action in the long term.
Strategic Dialogue & Internal/External Awareness
We are developing a shared Helmholtz approach to security, creating opportunities for dialogue on security and resilience research in the process. By working together, we are showcasing the expertise of the 18 Helmholtz Centres, connecting experts and pinpointing areas where new collaborations and joint research initiatives will generate the greatest value.
Innovation Ecosystem & Partnership Building
We are expanding our strategic partnerships to ensure that our solutions are applied even more precisely. A strong innovation ecosystem is essential for the responsible development and effective utilisation of new technologies. At the same time, we support spin-offs and the transfer of scientific knowledge to society and the economy.
Capability & Research Resilience
We continuously adapt our research structures to meet new security requirements. In addition, we strengthen governance and ethics frameworks for security-related research within the community and establish a reliable framework for responsible scientific practice.
