Industry Collaboration

The four-year project, funded by the European Union, is jointly coordinated by QCells and Helmholtz-Zentrum Berlin. The goal is to advance perovskite/silicon tandem photovoltaic (PV) technology on its path to market introduction and mass production to facilitate the EU's ambitious climate goals. At ZEISS Innovation Hub @ KIT in Eggenstein-Leopoldshafen, science and business come together to enable the establishment of high-tech and digital start-ups. The Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT) and Carl ZEISS AG formed a strategic partnership in 2018 and are working together in research, teaching, innovation, professional development, internationalization, recruiting and university marketing, as well as in the social dialog about technology developments.

In a public-private partnership with Evotec SE, the Helmholtz Institute for Pharmaceutical Research Saarland (HIPS) of the Helmholtz Centre for Infection Research (HZI) is working on the development of new compounds for the treatment of tuberculosis. Evotec employees work together with Helmholtz scientists on site at HIPS in the same facilities, which significantly benefits the project.

The Battery and Electrochemistry Laboratory (BELLA) at the Institute of Nanotechnology (INT) was established in 2010 and is supported by the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT) and BASF SE. Research at BELLA combines basic research with application-oriented projects on active and inactive materials and other cell components for lithium-ion batteries and next-generation batteries. KIT and BASF SE entered into a strategic partnership in 2017 and cooperate in research, teaching, innovation, further education, internationalization, recruiting and university marketing, as well as in the social dialogue on technology developments.

The German Cancer Research Center (DKFZ) and skin care products manufacturer Beiersdorf have been working together in a Joint Innovation Lab since July 2023 to research the epigenetic clock of skin cells. The interdisciplinary collaboration between skin biologists and cancer researchers enables molecular approaches to prevent skin cancer. By exploring epigenetic changes and developing targeted agents, the Lab aims to develop innovative strategies for skin cell rejuvenation and cancer prevention. The Joint Innovation Lab is supported with a budget of 4.8 million euros for four years and offers a promising platform for pioneering research in the field of skin aging and cancer prevention.

The Helmholtz-Zentrum Dresden-Rossendorf (HZDR) and semiconductor manufacturer GlobalFoundries Dresden have been cooperating increasingly since 2023 under a joint declaration of intent. In it, both parties agree on a series of measures to strengthen knowledge transfer, technology development and the promotion of young talent. In the future, for example, there will be more joint training programs and network meetings, as well as closer exchange in joint research on memory and information technologies and, in particular, on neuromorphic chips (i.e. chips modeled on the human brain). By the time the agreement expires at the end of 2025, both parties intend to transform the memorandum of understanding into a long-term cooperation agreement.

Glioblastomas are the most common and most aggressive brain tumors. The life expectancy of those affected is only 12-15 months from diagnosis and with current standard therapy. An antibody developed by Helmholtz Munich in combination with a radionuclide from the radiopharmaceutical biotech company Isotope Technologies Munich, ITM for short, could lead to longer survival. The antibody binds specifically to the enzyme carbonic anhydrase XII (CAXII), which is found in the brain exclusively on the surface of cancer cells. The antibody is coupled to the radionuclide n.c.a Lutetium-177. The aim is to destroy cancer cells that could not be surgically removed via the radioactive decay of lutetium-177 and at the same time spare healthy brain cells. This is because these disseminated tumor cells are often the reason for the recurrence of the disease. The drug candidate ITM-31 is now being tested in a Phase I trial. In addition to Universtiätsklinikum Münster as the sponsor, the university hospitals in Essen, Cologne and Würzburg are offering treatments as part of this clinical trial. Patient recruitment for the trial is currently underway.
