The Field Study Fellowship enables you to 'hands-on' test customer and user needs for your own research project. You will not only acquire user-inspired 'aha' moments, but also important skills that will help you to advance in your career. Gain a new perspective on your research, develop new questions by integrating the user and customer perspective. The Field Study Fellowship provides you with the best prerequisites for entering the market and putting your research into application.

The Field Study Fellowship supports you with

• Identifying and acquiring many potential customers for an interview to test customer needs for your research
• Thinking in terms of customer benefit and conducting good customer interviews
• Getting to know scientists with similar goals and learning from each other

Process of the program

Prerequisites

• Funding from one to a maximum of two persons. Only one person can be funded full-time

• Additional 5,500 € are reserved centrally for field study experts

We highly recommend the program to other researchers, since it made it possible for us to withdraw from the general work at the institute and thus prepare for the spin-off. The Quicopt team from Forschungszentrum Jülich (FZJ) develops a quantum-computing-inspired optimization software for companies in energy, logistics, and high-tech manufacturing. The solution significantly increases efficiency in complex planning and decision-making processes. This enables customers to use critical resources such as time and cost more effectively.

The MOLA team from GEOMAR Helmholtz Centre for Ocean Research Kiel is developing a compact sensor platform for flexible underwater monitoring. It can be deployed particularly quickly in applications such as offshore wind farms, CO₂ storage sites, or critical infrastructure surveillance. The platform provides real-time data for environmental and safety monitoring.

The RIM2D team from GFZ Helmholtz Centre for Geosciences (GFZ) develops a flood forecasting model that delivers near real-time results using GPU acceleration. It is available both as a web service and as a software package for integration into early warning systems and digital twins. The team also provides support, training, and engineering services.

eCO2RF from the Helmholtz Centre for Environmental Research (UFZ) is developing a modular transmission electron microscopy (TEM) sample holder platform to investigate processes under realistic conditions. The system enables controlled liquid and gas flow and allows media to be mixed directly before the sample. This makes dynamic experiments on reactions and aging processes possible.

Hummingbird from the German Aerospace Center (DLR) is developing technology to stabilize optical Earth-to-space communication links. The device corrects atmospheric distortions in real time, improving link performance. This enables secure, high-data-rate optical connectivity on a global scale.

MISMO from Helmholtz-Zentrum Berlin for Materials and Energy (HZB) is developing a compact in-situ monitoring system for thin-film solution processing. It enables quasi-simultaneous real-time photoluminescence and reflectance measurements. The modular concept supports research and industrial process control and can be expanded with additional capabilities.

D-BAND from Helmholtz-Zentrum Dresden-Rossendorf (HZDR) is developing an affordable silicon-based photodetector covering the visible to infrared range (300–2000 nm). The technology avoids rare and expensive materials and is environmentally friendly. It can be mass-produced using standard silicon chip manufacturing processes.

Aurora-PT from Helmholtz-Zentrum Dresden-Rossendorf (HZDR) is developing MRI-integrated proton therapy to enable real-time tumor visualization and adaptive irradiation. Its compact architecture supports highly precise, AI-assisted treatments of moving soft-tissue tumors and different patient positions. The approach aims to improve outcomes while reducing radiation dose, especially in pediatric treatments.

Perform3D from Deutsches Elektronen-Synchrotron (DESY) provides cutting-edge X-ray imaging services for characterizing complex and miniaturized semiconductor devices. The service reveals relationships between material structure and 3D performance that are difficult to access with conventional methods. This delivers new insights for R&D and failure analysis.

LCI-BIBAX from the Helmholtz Centre for Infection Research (HZI) is developing next-generation vaccines designed for long-lasting immunity with fewer side effects. The approach combines improved antigen designs with a novel platform technology. The goal is strong protection through simplified single-dose immunization.

Magnet-Pulser from Deutsches Elektronen-Synchrotron (DESY) is developing a device to re-magnetize permanent magnets that have lost their remanent magnetization. This enables cost-effective refurbishment of magnet structures, such as those used in undulators. In addition, the system can remove unwanted magnetization from measurement devices.

ASO-PACE from the German Center for Neurodegenerative Diseases (DZNE) is developing a universal platform for personalized therapies in neurological diseases. The technology uses patient-derived neural cells to rapidly and systematically test potential treatments. This helps identify safe and effective therapies faster and supports their translation into clinical use.

photreon from Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT) is developing a technology to produce green hydrogen using only water and sunlight. At its core is a low-cost yet highly efficient photoreactor combined with a photocatalyst. The patent-pending design is intended to enable scalable production.

PAERUBLOCK from the Helmholtz Centre for Infection Research (HZI) is developing a new therapy against Pseudomonas aeruginosa, a major cause of severe lung infections. The approach aims to disarm the pathogen rather than kill it. This is intended to improve outcomes while helping reduce antibiotic resistance.

SpecMon from the CISPA Helmholtz Center for Information Security is developing software that provides verifiable trust in digital communication security. Instead of only detecting known attack patterns, SpecMon checks at runtime whether an application complies with its security definition. This helps prevent novel attacks before damage occurs.

The project from the Max Delbrück Center for Molecular Medicine in the Helmholtz Association (MDC) is developing a personalized anti-metastatic therapy targeting key metastasis drivers such as MACC1 and S100A4. In parallel, a blood-based companion diagnostic is being developed to identify high-risk patients early. The goal is to reduce metastasis formation and prolong patient survival.

C.LEO.PATRA from GSI Helmholtz Centre for Heavy Ion Research (GSI) is developing satellite-based high-power laser systems to selectively remove hazardous space debris. The approach aims to protect existing satellites and future missions by eliminating dangerous fragments. The project supports safe and sustainable use of space.

EMA-EUV from GSI Helmholtz Centre for Heavy Ion Research (GSI) is developing a new imaging method for high-resolution microscopy using extreme ultraviolet radiation. The approach combines high resolution, increased penetration depth, and strong material contrast—especially for light elements. This enables new applications in medicine, biology, semiconductor research, and battery development.

At the GSI Helmholtzzentrum für Schwerionenforschung, AVLIS applies a laser-based method for energy-efficient isotope separation tailored to radiopharmaceuticals and fundamental research. The technology enables precise enrichment of high-demand isotopes, for example in cancer therapy. The aim is to establish a scalable process that meets the growing needs of industrial and research sectors.

At the German Aerospace Center (DLR), THESO is developing high-efficiency thermoelectric generators (TEGs) that convert industrial waste heat directly into electricity. With a tenfold increase in performance and a payback period of less than three years, the technology offers companies a cost-effective solution to reduce energy consumption and CO₂ emissions. The project focuses on integration into existing industrial processes.

Streamlined workflows for pathology labs are a key focus.

At CISPA, Fuzzware is revolutionizing embedded systems security with a firmware testing solution based on rehosting technology that eliminates the need for physical hardware. By running firmware on powerful servers, the system processes thousands of inputs per second to systematically uncover vulnerabilities. The goal is to identify flaws early in development and strengthen critical systems in automotive, medical, and IoT applications.

At Helmholtz Munich (HMGU), TherVacB is being developed as an innovative therapeutic vaccine aimed at curing chronic hepatitis B – a disease responsible for over one million deaths per year. Currently in early clinical trials, the vaccine is to be brought to market through a spin-off company. The goal is to establish the first curative treatment option for this widespread viral infection.

Percepta Tx is being developed at the Max Delbrück Center for Molecular Medicine (MDC) as a novel therapeutic approach to treating neuropathic pain at its source. By targeting previously untapped molecular mechanisms, the therapy aims to eliminate pain, restore touch perception, and improve quality of life. The project is built on decades of research and a solid intellectual property foundation, with the goal of clinical translation.

The BeyondPhD project at the Deutsches Elektronen-Synchrotron (DESY) is developing a structured concept to support the transition of PhD graduates and postdocs from academic research to industry. Based on market research, interviews, and analyses of existing programs, sustainable models are being created to match academic talents with suitable industrial partners. The long-term goal is to facilitate career entry while providing companies with access to highly qualified professionals.

The GeotherMoMics project at the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ) is developing methods for microbiological monitoring in geothermal plants and aquifer heat storage systems. The aim is to detect microbially induced efficiency losses at an early stage and to counteract them with targeted measures. This technology is designed to enhance the stability and performance of renewable thermal energy systems.

The team at the Max Delbrück Center for Molecular Medicine (MDC) is developing NMJ.Care, an innovative platform offering human-specific neuromuscular models. By using patient-derived stem cells, the technology supports personalized medicine, accelerates the development of therapies for rare neuromuscular diseases, and reduces reliance on animal testing. The ultimate goal is to bring safer and more effective treatments to patients faster.

At the Max Delbrück Center for Molecular Medicine (MDC), CUSWIBRID is developing a universal blood test to assess individual disease susceptibility. The technology measures immune and DNA repair competence and targets three key indications: heightened infection risk, undiagnosed immunodeficiencies, and cancer risk assessment. Its goal is to enable early identification of at-risk individuals, allowing for targeted treatments and relieving pressure on the healthcare system.

ATR-FTIR for Male Infertility, based at the Helmholtz Centre for Environmental Research (UFZ), explores the use of ATR-FTIR spectroscopy as a novel, non-invasive method for assessing sperm quality. The project aims to deliver an accessible and cost-effective screening solution for male fertility, applicable as a home test or clinical quick scan. This approach seeks to broaden diagnostics and proactively support reproductive health.

At the German Aerospace Center (DLR), the GeKoSens project is developing a wireless communication technology for high-precision spatial and temporal signal acquisition under extreme conditions. It is particularly designed for scenarios such as crash tests or rocket testing, where reliability and speed are crucial. The system aims to reduce costs and streamline operations while ensuring maximum data resolution.

At the Helmholtz-Zentrum Berlin for Materials and Energy (HZB), the EcoNitro project is developing a self-nitriding process for producing transition metal nitrides without using toxic ammonia gases. The technology enables scalable, cost-efficient, and environmentally friendly production of critical materials for green energy and catalysis. With up to 50% cost reduction, EcoNitro aims to set new standards in sustainable materials science.

At Helmholtz Munich (HMGU), TargetBio-Clinical is developing an AI-based decision-support platform that integrates single-cell RNA sequencing data for oncology diagnostics. The goal is to assist clinical laboratories and oncologists in designing personalized cancer treatments through more precise molecular insights. The project addresses the increasing demand for real-time profiling in modern cancer care.

At Forschungszentrum Jülich (FZJ), ISOTEM is developing specialized components for electron microscopes that allow atomic-level investigations of materials under real operating conditions. This includes measurements under live electrical current or microwave excitation. The innovation opens new experimental capabilities in materials research, quantum technologies, and the life sciences.

NEPAT, based at the Helmholtz Centre for Environmental Research (UFZ), is developing an AI-powered analysis tool that visualizes complex interdependencies in cross-sectoral policy making. The platform enables policymakers to assess the potential effects and risks of policies before implementation, fostering more informed decisions and reducing policy failure risks.

At the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ), OpenMind is developing a decentralized publishing platform that integrates blockchain infrastructure, tokenized assets, and a dual-impact reward model. The goal is to quantify and incentivize research impact based on both academic metrics and societal engagement. The platform aims to scale globally and foster a new era of transparent, inclusive, and impactful science communication.

SAIL – Satellite AI Labeler, developed at the Helmholtz-Zentrum Hereon, is an AI-based tool for automating the preprocessing and labeling of large satellite imagery datasets. The aim is to drastically reduce the manual workload and accelerate the training of remote sensing AI models. The technology tackles key bottlenecks in satellite-driven environmental and climate research.

At CISPA, GuardSphere is building an AI-powered cybersecurity platform tailored to industrial control systems. The solution detects network anomalies in real time, adapts autonomously to system behavior, and secures outdated infrastructure without the need for costly upgrades. The goal is to deliver a resilient and continuous protection layer for critical industrial environments.

At the Helmholtz-Zentrum Hereon, FricEx is developing a sustainable friction extrusion process for recovering and upgrading metallic waste materials such as aluminum, copper, and titanium alloys. By avoiding conventional remelting, the process achieves significant energy and material savings. The goal is to enable the production of advanced components with complex geometries and promote circular economy practices in metal processing.

AstroAgent, based at the Deutsches Elektronen-Synchrotron (DESY), is developing intelligent assistance software for complex technical facilities such as observatories, accelerators, or industrial plants. By combining deep technical knowledge with real-time monitoring and automated error prevention, the solution aims to minimize downtime. The project supports the safe and efficient operation of high-complexity infrastructure.

The EDY diagnostics team at the DKFZ is working on the development of an innovative blood test for the early detection of HPV-related oropharyngeal cancer, the proof-of-concept of which has already been successfully demonstrated. The aim is to obtain CE marking in accordance with IVDR standards for commercialization, for which quality and risk management as well as approval studies are being driven forward. Strategies to expand the technology and obtain FDA approval are being examined, while the product is continuously optimized through customer feedback and market analyses.

KCP aims to lower metallization costs in solar cell production through an innovative low-temperature paste with 30% higher conductivity while reducing silver consumption. The KIT team's technology is based on a new physical concept and enables cell manufacturers to produce more efficient next-generation cells, creating a sustainable market advantage. Strategic partnerships and prototype tests with first customers will drive market entry and the scale-up process.

The immunXnano team offers a human immune cell-based immune safety test that supports pharmaceutical and biotech companies in the development of safe nanomedicines and vaccines by analyzing cytotoxicity and immune activation simultaneously. The automated, miniaturized and high-throughput solution from the DZNE enables multimodal and multiparametric evaluation, complemented by proprietary databases with deep insights into the human immune response. During the funding period, the prototype will be iteratively tested in order to develop a market-ready MVP and all relevant steps for company foundation will be prepared.

DeKox is driving the development of living biotherapeutic products (LBPs) for clinical trials to displace harmful bacteria in the gut and restore impaired gut function in patients. These innovative therapeutics developed by the HZI team could benefit patients with chronic inflammatory bowel diseases, cancer patients, dialysis patients and organ transplant recipients in particular, as there are currently no approved treatments for preventive intestinal rehabilitation. An interdisciplinary team of scientists, clinicians and technology transfer experts is working on laying the foundations for clinical applications.

With SideroGaIn, the HZDR team is developing the only economically viable technology for recovering gallium from low-concentration industrial wastewater, the efficiency and cost-effectiveness of which have already been demonstrated in a validated pilot plant. In addition to gallium, the technology is also suitable for the recovery of other critical metals such as germanium, palladium and indium. The aim of the project is to bring the technology to TRL 7, complete the automation of the pilot plant and attract industrial customers and investors for scaling up.

The PoreX team at DLR is developing a digital platform for accelerated and resource-efficient material development of porous materials used in areas such as energy storage, filtration and biomedicine. The platform combines AI-assisted microstructure reconstruction with simulation tools to enable rapid prototyping and optimization, reducing time, cost and environmental impact. In addition, personalized consulting services are offered to meet specific customer requirements and expand the application possibilities of porous materials.

The goal of the KIT start-up project “SUNEO” is to introduce a groundbreaking process for manufacturing highly efficient solar modules to the photovoltaic market. Based on the combination of, for example, silicon and perovskite photovoltaic technologies into a tandem solar module, an innovative method is used to increase material efficiency, scalability and device lifetime. This innovative process enables the commercial production of this advanced technology for the first time.

MML - Multilayer Laue Lenses develops innovative “Multilayer Laue” lenses (MLLs) that focus high-energy X-rays with nanometer-scale precision, enabling unprecedented resolution and efficiency. These optics improve imaging and crystallography for synchrotron and XFEL facilities and are offered to leading X-ray equipment and X-ray scanner manufacturers. In addition to the optics, supporting services for alignment and optimization are provided to ensure peak performance.

The PENCIL project is developing high-precision probes for analyzing electrochemical interfaces that combine scanning electrochemical microscopy (SECM) and atomic force microscopy (AFM). This technology enables a detailed investigation of energy storage materials and catalytic processes with high spatial resolution and addresses crucial challenges in the development of batteries, fuel cells and other energy systems. With a technology readiness level of 3–4 and several patents, marketing is being driven forward through presentations at conferences and trade fairs and with the support of HZB.

SciCrypt Labs is developing an all-in-one data management platform designed to help companies and researchers manage data more efficiently by automating tasks such as data processing, ensuring version control, and significantly improving data traceability. By adhering to the FAIR principles, the platform promotes better data sharing, reusability and compliance, which ultimately drives innovation and saves time and resources.

PROTON has identified and optimized a small-molecule inhibitor of alpha-toxin, a pore-forming toxin produced by the bacterium Staphylococcus aureus that impairs the immune response and causes tissue destruction during infection. PROTON's inhibitor can neutralize S. aureus and prevent life-threatening ventilator-associated pneumonia and improve skin symptoms in flare-ups of atopic dermatitis.

Muc TraVir offers a service platform for the preclinical analysis of mucus samples and for the evaluation of novel antiviral respiratory tract drugs for the private and public sector. A cell platform that mimics the human respiratory tract and mucus production is used to support companies in the development of drug formulations and delivery systems. In the long term, the service should help to discover new drugs for viral infections and improve the diagnosis of mucus-related diseases.

NTSC is focused on the development of innovative antibiotics for the treatment of drug-resistant gonococcal infections and other sexually transmitted infections (STIs). Three promising antimicrobial compounds with potent in-vitro activity against gonococci are currently being evaluated in in-vivo proof-of-concept studies. The aim is to address the urgent need for new treatments for resistant STI pathogens.

Quicopt is developing optimization software inspired by quantum physics to efficiently solve combinatorial optimization problems. This technology aims to help companies in various industries improve business decisions and reduce costs. The software addresses a key need for powerful solutions to complex optimization tasks.

EasyMRI offers a plug-and-play solution for high-resolution MRI imaging, specifically for neuroscience research groups. At its core is a customized MRI scanner that provides state-of-the-art MRI methods and can be integrated into the customer's existing MRI environment. In addition, on-site and remote technical service and expert support are provided to ensure optimal use.

SafeNest is developing an AI-powered satellite monitoring system to actively monitor buildings and their surroundings to test resilience to time-related, weather-related or other threats. Identified irregularities or risks are analyzed and provided with an initial assessment to enable rapid action. In the event of serious problems, the involvement of experts is recommended to ensure comprehensive on-site assessments.

AE for gene therapy is developing an innovative genome editing method called “append editing” that safely and precisely corrects mutations without DNA cutting. By adding chemical groups to specific DNA regions, the editing is triggered, complementing conventional CRISPR methods. This technology offers promising approaches for treating difficult-to-treat genetic diseases such as ataxia-telangiectasia or Fraser syndrome 1.

D-LEARN aims to develop hardware-integrated research laboratories to create a practice-oriented learning ecosystem in the fields of semiconductor science, e-mobility, AI/ML and green energy. This is supported by an AI-driven software platform that enables intelligent evaluation of learners and connects them with industry and research partners. The aim is to provide efficient training solutions for growing future-oriented industries.

The Climate Service Database (CSD) will provide easy and reliable access to regional and local climate information to support businesses, research institutions and society in adapting to climate change. The database is designed to serve as a scalable and extensible source to enable informed decision-making for sustainable and carbon-free strategies. The Blue-BI Field Study Fellowship will investigate whether the webODV software developed at the AWI can be used in the area of business intelligence (BI). webODV, a flexible and generic software that can process almost any type of data, is being extended in the BI version so that it can be linked to programming environments on the server side. The goal is to offer not only standard functions such as visualization and analysis but also complex data pipelines with statistical evaluations, time series analyses and AI algorithms to gain valuable insights from data.

The EO Kiosk enables companies in the agro- and farming sector to conduct environmental monitoring in a cost-effective and easy way to measure and assess their ecological footprint and dependencies. The data provided helps to identify and manage risks posed to ecosystems and biodiversity, leading to optimized production processes and improved inventory management. The key technology of the EO Kiosk is based on the MiSa-C algorithm, which uses machine learning to quickly and efficiently classify various environmental indicators, replacing the need for extensive field research.

The tool helps improve decision-making, efficiency, and transparency in healthcare and life sciences, while addressing unmet needs in data management.

5pectre Optixx combines a compact ultra-broadband spectrometer, developed at FLASH (DESY), with an innovative machine learning-based spectrum analysis software. This combination aims to enhance FTIR spectroscopy in material analysis labs across science and industry, making measurements faster and more affordable.

The Citrapeutics team is working on the development of citraconic acid-based drugs that restore immunity to a wide range of diseases such as cancer, infections and chronic inflammation. The basis for this are the inhibitors of the enzyme cis-aconitate decarboxylase (ACOD1), an enzyme that plays an important role in the progression of tumor diseases and loss of immune function. For the first time worldwide, the team at the HZI has identified these inhibitors and their potential.

Based on a thermochemical energy storage technology developed at DLR, the Calogy team is working on bringing a renewable heating system to the market that will provide customers with a cost-effective, climate-neutral and reliable supply of heat. The product can be integrated into the existing heating infrastructure in a large number of buildings and supplement or even replace fossil-fueled heat generators such as oil or gas boilers.

This new process enables the sorted upcycling of concrete granulate from demolition into sand and the industrial material calcium carbonate. The process permanently binds CO2 from an exhaust gas stream into calcium carbonate, which is used in plastics, paint and paper production. The Field Study Fellowship aims to identify potential customers at an early stage and analyze their needs.

Accelerated Muscle Biotechnologies (AMB) strives to provide access and support to small-angle X-ray diffraction experiments for muscle scientists around the world, focusing on skeletal and cardiac muscle mechanics and exercise physiology and their integration into academic biotech, and healthcare markets. With the aim of becoming the first commercial service provider in this field, the team would like to use the Field Study Fellowship to identify potential customers and establish contact with user groups outside basic research.

Cyracle is a software that enables companies and research institutes to find suitable chemicals to develop their target application at a new speed. By using existing data, cyracle creates computer models that help plan future experiments more efficiently. The aim of the Field Study Fellowship is to gain a better understanding of the needs of potential customers and current procedures for selecting suitable chemicals.

The aim of the project is to use biomarkers and machine learning to predict how people will respond to the flu vaccine, as it varies in effectiveness depending on the individual. The aim of the project is to enable software developers to quickly collect information about code snippets they reuse in their codebase. A new machine-learning-based method of data analysis for fourier transform spectroscopy in the infrared and far-infrared spectral regions (FTIR). In their Field Study, the team will find out (among else) what “pains” customers experience with existing software and what they require of an FTIR analyzing software.

Sensor arrays that offer an innovative way to measure oxygen levels in the immediate vicinity of spheroids (3D cell cultures). This can be applied in in vitro drug testing, enabling a testing environment that can approximate tissue-specific oxygen levels, creating a more accurate testing environment. In this way, in vitro testing become more competitive and can help to reduce animal testing in pre-clinical trials and decrease the later risk of the tested drugs for humans. In their Field Study, they will explore customer needs as well as paths towards a strong position among their competitors.

A ceramic induction heater for the generation of industrial high-temperature heat (upwards of 700 °C). This heat – that, among else, is needed for the production of ceramics, bricks and tiles – has previously been generated with the help of natural gas. Facing political and economic changes and the looming climate crisis, this technology has the potential to replace natural gas and to save up to 1.6 Mio. tons of CO₂ annually (in Germany alone). In their Field Study, they will interview potential customers and research their competition.

In their Field Study, they will interview potential customers, especially SME using additive manufacturing (3D printing), in order to gain a detailed understanding of their needs.

The goal of DAVIS is to harness the potential of microbial genomics for effective management of disease outbreaks and prevention of patient-to-patient transmission. In addition, the team aims to thoroughly understand bacterial pathogenicity and strategies to overcome killing by antibiotics. Their extensive genome collection provides the basis for applying systems biology approaches to identify previously unknown markers of clinical relevance. In this context, the availability of comprehensive marker lists promises rapid and accurate prediction of relevant phenotypes such as antibiotic resistance and pathogenic potential.

Newly developed products/technologies inevitably have to be tested or qualified to prove their performance. For these tests, companies and especially research institutions often require special facilities. The development of these facilities is a complex and cost-intensive undertaking and often requires specially developed software - especially in the quantum technology sector.

The QuanTUm team would like to use their Field Study to better understand the market and customer needs for the software platform they developed. It has the potential to greatly reduce the development time of test systems for quantum technologies.

The goal of UCSAT is to improve the tense space debris situation by passive-optical staring. For this purpose, they are developing a sensor that autonomously detects, identifies and catalogs satellites and space debris objects from a size of 40cm in low Earth orbits. Due to its compact and weatherproof design, it can be placed almost anywhere.

If the capacitive touchscreen of a smartphone is damaged, the original display can often no longer be used. If no repair service is available at short notice, travelers in particular lose the functionality of their phone and easily get into trouble. Touch-on aims to provide a temporary interactive interface when the capacitive display is damaged. To protect the user (hands & face) at the same time, it is glued / applied to the destroyed and damaged display. It provides the functionality to make phone calls and can include a display, for example, to show the number or provide other feedback to the user. Magnetic switches are the best option to avoid interference from the original capacitive display, which may still respond to touch. The new display is based on HIL FlexiSens sensors (switches and sliders) and has the same functionality as a capacitive display.

There are well-documented differences between men and women at the cellular level, in metabolism, and in drug response. Nevertheless, gender differences are still largely ignored in the preclinical phase of drug development. Failure to include cells and animals of both sexes in preclinical studies leads to a male bias in the translation of results, clinical concepts, and drug development. As part of the Field of Study, the team aims to gather information from research institutions, pharmaceutical companies, clinicians, and non-profit organizations in the field of women's medicine to identify the need for gender-specific comparisons and assays in cell culture aimed at either disease modeling, drug development, or drug safety.

The team developed a new approach for radio clock synchronization that opens up the potantial to significantly increase security and reliability on mobile networks. This potential is important especially in the context of ever-increasing use of cellular networks for data transmission by industrial IoT (Internet of Things) solutions. The Field Study will be used to conduct market research in the field of time synchronization in 5G and 6G networks, especially with reference to the newly developed technology (Gradient Clock Synchronization).

Ethical and economic concerns with animal testing are increasingly coming into focus. More specifically, the experiments are unsuitable for testing the effects of thousands of chemicals that must undergo regulatory review before they can be introduced to the market. In addition, animal testing is associated with high costs for chemical companies due to the time, bureaucracy, and salaries for highly skilled employees. However, it is still unclear whether these companies are willing to switch from animal testing to more animal-friendly alternative approaches for product testing.

The Field Study aims to investigate the market demand for novel alternative methods (NAMs) to efficiently test new chemical products. It also seeks to determine whether chemical companies are willing to switch from mammalian testing to friendlier and fairer alternative testing methods to save time and money. Finally, the research will lay the groundwork for a spin-off activity that will offer high-throughput animal-friendly NAMs to companies.

In order to promote the acceptance and implementation of the use of data science, especially in small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) from Schleswig-Holstein, a data science consultancy is to be established that specializes in finding a sustainable way to integrate data science into these very companies. Sustainable here means that the knowledge and skills to apply data science in the company are transferred into the company. This should go beyond a feasibility study or a flagship project.
In this project, interviews with SMEs will be conducted to find out exactly which use cases can be considered for this and how this transfer of knowledge and skills can be sensibly designed.
In addition, this project will develop a business model for such data science consulting with a focus on SMEs in the entire DACH region and, for example, develop attractive consulting packages.
