The Helmholtz Association’s activities range from space-based and terrestrial applications in navigation and geodesy to autonomous mobility, communication, and life science. They will be combined in two primary strategic directions.

New ISS laboratory for ultracold nuclear research

The "Cold Atoms Lab" – CAL for short – is a compact, atom chip-based facility for studying ultracold quantum gases such as Bose-Einstein condensates (BEC). CAL heralds a new era in ISS research, as it is now possible for the first time to investigate fundamental physics issues with high precision using quantum objects close to absolute temperature zero.
