Challenge #134

Support cancer therapy with improved imaging.

To gain the most information about each tumor, we optimize imaging diagnostics: the goal is to create customized therapy plans for each patient.

Participating centers

We use powerful imaging equipment such as computed tomography (CT) systems or magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scanners to detect hidden tumors and metastases. Imaging also allows physicians to assess the spread of cancer and observe whether it responds to therapy. The devices can also be applied to characterize the biological properties of tumors.

The German Cancer Research Center (DKFZ) uses the latest imaging technologies, such as a 7 Tesla ultra-high-field MRI, a dual-energy CT, and PET-CT and PET-MRI scanners. We achieve a lot of information with multimodal imaging, a combination of different imaging procedures.

Based on this information, we then create individual therapy plans. We also use AI-supported methods: they help to more effectively evaluate the enormous amounts of image data generated in radiological diagnostics.

And we are looking further into the future: Together with partners from hospitals and industry, we are further refining imaging methods. In this way, we want to extract more information from the image data - to benefit cancer patients.
