But the step from current qubit demonstrators to full-fledged quantum computers is still a huge one. No one today can say which qubit platform is best suited to constructing a quantum computer. There is still room for radical improvement resulting from developments in the exploration of quantum phenomena in materials and systems.

The Helmholtz Association intends to develop tailored materials and quantum systems. One important goal is to research the basics of quantum systems at the atomic and molecular levels and to construct quantum mechanical characteristics with atomic precision.

Quantum Materials

Quantum materials such as semiconductors and superconductors, which were discovered in the last century, are already used today in lasers, smartphones, solar cells, and particle accelerators. Now, these materials are to be used to develop further technologies such as quantum computers and quantum sensors. To this end, Jülich researchers are optimizing existing materials and developing new ones.
