Helmholtz offers outstanding researchers the opportunity to advance their careers in a decisive way. Our programs open up reliable career prospects, strengthen international networking, and create space for independent, cutting-edge research.

Helmholtz Global Fellow Program

Helmholtz invites outstanding international scientists with a PhD and technical specialists to come to a Helmholtz Center for a research stay of up to two years. The aim is to deepen expertise, build networks, and work together on Helmholtz's scientific priorities, thereby advancing in one’s career. Applications are submitted to the respective Center.

Helmholtz Investigator Group

This program enables outstanding postdocs to gain scientific independence. It supports junior research groups with long-term funding and close ties to a university. Participants develop their own research agenda and take part in the Helmholtz Leadership Academy. Upon successful evaluation, leaders of junior research groups are offered a permanent position at their Helmholtz Center

Funding of first-time professorial appointments of excellent women scientists (W2/W3)

This program opens the door to excellent female scientists for a permanent professorship (W2 or W3) in cooperation with a German university. The aim is to attract and retain “rising stars” from Germany and abroad. The program is aimed at candidates with outstanding scientific achievements who will be appointed for the first time to the W2 or W3 professorship level from a junior professorship, young investigator group leadership position, or another post-doctoral position. Highly qualified internal Helmholtz candidates are also eligible.

Helmholtz Distinguished Professorship

With this program, Helmholtz recruits internationally leading female scientists from abroad for W3 professorships. It offers excellent research conditions, reliable career prospects through permanent appointments, and the opportunity to work at the senior management level of a Helmholtz Center. The aim is to strengthen the internationalization of the Helmholtz Association and advance strategically relevant research topics.
