Helmholtz Institute Würzburg

Increasing antibiotic resistance, chronic infections and emerging pathogens are placing ever greater demands on our healthcare system.

In this context, the central role of ribonucleic acids (RNA) in regulatory and sensory processes within human cells has already been recognized. However, the role RNA plays in infections is still largely misunderstood.

The Helmholtz Institute for RNA-based Infection Research (HIRI) is the first research institution worldwide to link the topics of RNA biology and infections. To this end, the Braunschweig-based Helmholtz Centre for Infection Research (HZI) is cooperating with the Julius Maximilians University of Würzburg (JMU).

The research concept of the cooperation merges the expertise of two internationally highly respected institutions: The University of Würzburg has outstanding experience in RNA research and employs Jörg Vogel, managing director of HIRI, one of the world's most renowned RNA researchers. The HZI, in turn, is Germany's largest infection research institution and has built up a unique pipeline for innovative therapies, ranging from the discovery of promising drug candidates to the development of new drugs.

Together, HIRI researchers are developing innovative therapies and drugs that unlock the enormous potential of RNA for patients.
