Helmholtz Federated IT Services (HIFIS)

A modern, community-wide information infrastructure is the foundation for our outstanding cutting-edge research thrives on collaboration:

In many cases, we work together across the boundaries of our six research fields, both within and beyond the six Helmholtz research fields, in order to bundle our expertise even more precisely. The basis for this is a Helmholtz Federated IT Services (HIFIS) addresses this need and creates a seamless, functioning, and extremely powerful IT infrastructure. Helmholtz Federated IT Services (HIFIS) provides this.

This includes a secure and easy-to-use collaborative environment with information and communication technology services accessible from anywhere. HIFIS supports the development of high-performance networks, innovative research software with a high level of quality, visibility and sustainability, and hands-on training programs. The platform ensures that our scientists can quickly identify and use relevant IT solutions – anywhere within the community. HIFIS also supports and connects researchers who want to develop and publish high-quality software themselves.

These goals are realized through three competence clusters: The Cloud Services Cluster for a federated platform for proven world-class cloud services, a Backbone Services Cluster for high-performance, trusted network infrastructure with unified basic services, and a Software Services Cluster with a platform, training, and support for high-quality, sustainable software development.

The specific concern of the Cloud Services competence cluster is to provide a federated cloud platform for services offered to the entire scientific community and partners in the area. The federation is primarily composed of existing solutions from the various providers and places a "meta layer" over them to provide uniform access for users. This is then gradually expanded to include innovative solutions.

The goals of the HIFIS competence cluster "Backbone Services" are to provide a stable network infrastructure and basic services that can be used collaboratively in order to meet the increasing need for research networking and the growing volume of data in the community.

On the one hand, the Competence Cluster "Software Services" will train and support researchers to enable them to develop and publish high-quality software that can be maintained and used sustainably. On the other hand, the subsequent use of existing software by researchers will be promoted by providing tools for finding and using suitable software solutions, by finding contact persons, and by providing support in establishing communities for concrete research software.
