Stefan Bauer

Stefan Bauer develops algorithms to identify causal relationships in large datasets.

Stefan Bauer is a senior researcher at Helmholtz Munich. As one of only a few AI experts worldwide, he works successfully at the interface between causality and deep learning. Together with his team, Bauer develops algorithms that not only identify statistical clusters or outliers in huge datasets, but also causal relationships. Even powerful AI models have struggled with this task so far, as they are  often blind to cause-and-effect relationships.

Bauer wants to close this gap. He therefore tests his algorithms not only in simulations, but also on specific real-world tasks. His goal is to develop AI models that can recognize causes, explain their decisions, and quickly adapt to new problems.

Bauer studied mathematics at ETH Zurich and economics and finance at the University of London. In 2018, he received his doctorate in computer science from ETH Zurich. After working in industry, as an assistant professor at KTH Stockholm, and as a group leader at the Max Planck Institute for Intelligent Systems in Tübingen, he joined Helmholtz in Munich in 2023. He is also an associate professor at the Technical University of Munich.
