Marcel Binz

Marcel Binz bridges AI research and psychological theory, developing AI applications that can simulate and predict human thinking and behavior.

Marcel Binz is a cognitive scientist at the Institute for Human-Centered AI at Helmholtz Munich. He uses machine learning to investigate the functional principles of the human mind. Together with his team, he has developed an AI that thinks in ways similar to humans: Centaur. This language model was trained on ten million decisions from 160 psychological experiments to identify typical decision-making strategies. As a result, Centaur can not only simulate human behavior with remarkable accuracy but also predict it—both in familiar scenarios and in novel situations. This is particularly relevant for health research, for example when examining how people behave under psychological stress.

Binz received his PhD in 2021 from Philipps University of Marburg and has been working at Helmholtz Munich’s Institute for Human-Centered AI since 2023.
