CO2 storage: Down below
Where should we put all the carbon dioxide which we breathe out into the atmosphere? Research scientists working on a project in Ketzin are attempting to bury it in the ground. Initial indications are that the principle works with small quantities of CO2 – negative effects were not observed. Nevertheless, the technology has a very uncertain future in Germany
Long-term health research project: Profile of Germany
The survey due to start in the coming year will be on a grand scale, with 200,000 subjects set to take part in the biggest German long-term health research project to date. Interview with research scientists Karl-Heinz Jöckel and Karin Halina Greiser on blood samples, data protection - and the hope of new therapies
Materials research: high-tech lift-off
It was 28 April 1988 when the face of aircraft construction changed forever. An Aloha Airlines Boeing 737-200 was flying at an altitude of over 7,000 metres when a large piece of the fuselage blew off, suddenly transforming the jet into a cabriolet and forcing the pilot to struggle to make an emergency landing. The cause of the disaster, which left one person dead and 65 injured, was a crack which had formed between two rows of rivets in the aircraft skin.
Scientific careers: Should I stay or should I go?
Many young German scientists still see North America as a major launching pad for their careers, but more and more of them are wanting to return to Germany.
Nuclear physics: the quest for the unknown element
A handful of atoms, synthetically generated, which exist for milliseconds and then disintegrate again immediately - research scientists who want to seek out new elements have to put in a great deal of effort for this fleeting moment. How do synthetic elements originate and why are they being sought out?
