Our Research Centers

Scientists in 18 Helmholtz Centers work on a wide range of topics, such as A for astrophysics, B for biology, C for cell research, and so on. Almost 42,000 staff use the most modern scientific infrastructure, including, in particular, large-scale facilities and instrumentation, which are also open to use by members of the international scientific community. Working on behalf of the state, Helmholtz scientists pursue an ambitious goal: To make an essential contribution to solving the grand challenges which society faces.

In order to make a vital contribution towards solving the problems of our time and in our society, Helmholtz-Zentrum Dresden-Rossendorf (HZDR) researchers focus on answering the following three questions:

  • How can energy and resources be utilized in an efficient, safe, and sustainable way? 
  • How can malignant tumors be more precisely visualized, characterized, and more effectively treated? 
  • How do matter and materials behave under the influence of strong fields and in smallest dimensions?


Research Sector Energy

Global bottlenecks are predictable - in the reliable supply of energy, the production of raw materials, and the safe disposal and treatment of wastes and residues. That is why HZDR energy researchers are looking for solutions to meet the needs of present and future generations. The HZDR and the TU Bergakademie Freiberg (Freiberg University of Mining and Technology) are pooling their competences and infrastructure in the Helmholtz Institute Freiberg for Resource Technology with the objective to provide new and environmentally sound technologies for the exploration, mining, and use of raw materials. The HZDR also contributes to new storage technologies and the safety and efficiency of power plants and industrial facilities.


Research Sector Health

Some 450,000 people per year in Germany develop cancer. In order to advance the battle against cancer, it is important for researchers from diverse sectors, ranging from biology to chemistry and physics all the way to medicine, to cooperate with one another. Also relevant: The transfer of findings from basic research into clinical applications and back.Cancer research in the HZDR focuses on several major fields: The scientists conduct research on new radioactive pharmaceuticals for the diagnosis of cancer and on substances for cancer therapy. They develop and improve innovative imaging methods used in oncology, work on tomorrow's radiation therapy equipment, and improve the cancer therapy through biologically individualized and technologically optimized radiotherapy.


Research Sector Structure of Matter

A particular strength of the Helmholtz Association that is especially taken benefit of in the research sector matter: the operation and the use of large-scale and complex research infrastructures. The HZDR scientists use high magnetic fields or intense beams to research fundamental phenomena, on the one hand; and, on the other hand, to better understand and systematically influence materials with great potential for future technologies. This will create the prerequisites for innovative products and solutions to be used in industry and will help maintain our standard of living also in the future.


Facts & Figures

The Helmholtz-Zentrum Dresden-Rossendorf (HZDR) has been a member of the Helmholtz Association since January 1, 2011, and is located at four sites: Dresden, Leipzig, Freiberg, and Grenoble. The HZDR was founded on January 1, 1992, although the history of the research venue Dresden-Rossendorf actually dates all the way back to 1956. The HZDR employs about 1.000 staff members; approx. 450 of whom are scientists including 160 doctoral candidates.
