Seminar “Effective Scientific Presentations”

25 and 26 November 2014
Helmholtz-Zenrum Berlin, Adlershof

The scientific talk, like the scientific paper, is a key part of communication within the scientific community. The modern scientist must be able to deliver a well organized, well delivered scientific talk.

The Helmholtz Virtual Institute for Dynamic Pathways in Multidimensional Landscapes is pleased to announce the seminar “Effective Scientific Presentations”.

In this seminar, participants will work on improving their presentation skills for scientific conferences. You will learn strategies and practical techniques, and apply them to create and present a presentation of your own in a professional way.

A special focus will be given to the particular challenges of presenting in a foreign language, and to boosting participants’ confidence.

Essential steps in developing a presentation include:

  • content development
  • structure
  • visual aids
  • voice
  • body language
  • delivery
  • questions and answers
  • dealing with nervousness

Step by step, you will transfer these contents by applying the ideas and techniques from these modules in your own presentations.

Short videos of positive examples from expert speakers will be shown and discussed.

You will observe your fellow participants give talks, engage in the following discussions and give one another feedback on the effectiveness of their presentation. Presenters will be shown video recordings of their own performance.

This two-day seminar will be conducted by language school Lingua Franca.
