Seminar “Scientific Writing”

30 June and 1 July 2015
Helmholtz-Zenrum Berlin, Adlershof

Scientific papers are for sharing one’s original research work with other scientists or for reviewing the research conducted by others. To do this effectively, a scientific paper must fulfil two objectives. Firstly, it must accurately describe the procedures that were followed and the results that were obtained. Secondly, it must place these results in perspective by relating them to the existing state of knowledge and by interpreting their significance for future study.

In this seminar, participants will work on improving their writing skills for scientific papers. They will learn strategies and practical techniques, and apply them to specially created exercises as well as their own writing.

A special focus will be given to the particular challenges of writing in a foreign language.

Elements to consider when scientific papers:

-    Structure – Standard Sections and their functions
-    Style
-    Subjects/Actions
-    Cohesion/Emphasis
-    Abbreviations
-    Tenses
-    Simplicity
-    Passive Voice and first person
-    Overused words
-    False friends

Step by step, the participants will transfer these contents by applying the ideas and techniques from these modules in exercises and later their own writing.

Short extracts of positive examples from expert writers will be presented and discussed.

Participants will read fellow participants’ writing, engage in the discussions and give one another feedback on the effectiveness of their text.

This two-day seminar will be conducted by language school Lingua Franca.
