The Programme ā€žScience and Technology of Nanosystems (STN)ā€

The programme Science and Technology of Nanosystems (STN) aims to implement a long-standing vision in science and technology, which is to control and shape materials from the atomic and molecular via the nano- and microscopic scales to the macroscopic scale in order to realise nanosystems with new and appealing functionalities. STN develops research that ranges from the most fundamental understanding (theory + experiment) to the exploration of technological application perspectives in the materials and IT domains. In particular, the potential of materials with structural dimensions of only a few nanometres have not, to date, been extensively developed. In this regard, two aspects play a major role: First, the characteristics of individual nanostructures differ from those of solid-state bodies. The challenge here is to integrate these nanostructures into a nanosystem in which each component can be individually approached. Secondly, new properties for the solid-state body can be created by combining many nano-elements of similar or identical nature to a nanomaterial.

The programme STN combines basic scientific research in the nanosciences, the application of tailor-made materials, the development of process technologies and the creation of systems ready to market. The programme focuses on three major topics: the research of condensed matter and molecular building blocks, the exploration of nanomaterials (function and manufacturing), and the research on optics and photonics.
