Proof of Concept Initiative
The Proof of Concept Initiative (PoC) is to test a future, nationwide format that will help to implement preclinical research in clinical development faster and more efficiently. The initiative was jointly launched by Helmholtz and Fraunhofer, with the involvement of Deutsche Hochschulmedizin.
The first call for applications for PoC Initiative projects took place in 2017. Consortia consisting of at least one partner from the Fraunhofer Gesellschaft, Helmholtz Association, and Deutsche Hochschulmedizin were eligible to apply. Despite the associated requirements and the relatively short application period, 82 drafts were submitted. Of these, eleven projects were invited to submit a full proposal and to present the consortia in Berlin. In February 2018, a jury of experts from science, business, and regulatory authorities selected the most promising research projects. The four projects will receive up to three million euros in funding over the next three years.
