Science Projects in Marine Research
Cooperations with schools are realised in multiple ways at the Helmholtz Centre for Ocean Research Kiel. Whether in project weeks at school with the support by scientists of the research institution, or in dedicated studies by individual pupils at GEOMAR: the goal is not just to learn about ocean sciences, but most of all to encounter the topics in a personal project. How do oxygen minimum zones develop in the world ocean? What are the links between subduction of oceanic crust and volcanism? What can be deduced from long-term observations of water temperature and salinity about the influence of climate change on various ecosystems in the ocean? By experiments, observation and literature research, pupils and teachers jointly approach complex topics for which the boundaries between different school subjects quickly blur.
Topics at a glance:
- The ocean as a sink for CO2: from climate buffer to ocean acidification
- Plankton: the basis of marine food webs
- Earth quakes: something's stuck in the deep-sea trench
