Cancer Information Service at the German Cancer Research Center (DKFZ)

The Cancer Information Service at the German Cancer Research Center provides comprehensive and scientifically based information on all aspects of oncology. The service is for anyone who has questions about cancer: patients, their families and friends, as well as people looking for information on cancer prevention and cancer screening. The Cancer Information Service offers all specialists involved in caring for cancer patients facts and sources that have been individually researched. Every year, the Cancer Information Service responds to around 34,000 individual inquiries via telephone, email, social media, and in person during its office hours in Heidelberg and Dresden. On its website, the Cancer Information Service provides the latest knowledge, addresses, link tips, and references to specialist sources. Between 260,000 and 500,000 individual users access the website each year. The Cancer Information Service was set up in 1986 using project funding from the German Federal Ministry of Health. Since 2010, it has been funded by institutional resources from the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research as the national reference center for cancer information.

A valuable starting point in establishing the Allergy Information Service was provided by Helmholtz Zentrum München’s many years of experience in communicating health topics via other information services (Lung Information Service, FLUGS Information Service Environment and Health, Environmental Consulting Bavaria, etc.).
