15 ERC Starting Grants for Helmholtz

Helmholtz was more successful than ever before in this year's ERC Starting Grant awards. The awards allow promising young researchers to establish their own research groups and are highly coveted.

Recently, the European Research Council (ERC) announced the results for the current Starting Grant call. Helmholtz was more successful than in any previous call for proposals: 15 of the renowned grants were awarded to scientists at the centers. The award for young researchers is endowed with up to 1.5 million euros each. "This is a very great success and I congratulate all fifteen scientists from the bottom of my heart. The Association has thus also achieved a very remarkable result in European competition," says Helmholtz President Otmar D. Wiestler.

The Starting Grants will go to the following scientists:

  1. Caliskan, Neva, Helmholtz-Zentrum für Infektionsforschung: T-FRAME: Real-time analysis of ribosomal frameshifting and its impact on immunity and disease
  2. De La Rosa, Kathrin, Max-Delbrück-Centrum für Molekulare Medizin in der Helmholtz-Gemeinschaft: AutoEngineering: Engineering antibodies in B cells using endogenous AID activity
  3. Fuhrmann, Gregor, Helmholtz-Zentrum für Infektionsforschung: Gels4Bac: Pathogen-responsive hydrogels release antimicrobial vesicles for local infection treatment
  4. Li, Yang, Helmholtz-Zentrum für Infektionsforschung: ModVaccine: Cross-omics integration to identify modulators for improving vaccine efficacy
  5. Menden, Michael, Helmholtz Zentrum München - Deutsches Forschungszentrum für Gesundheit und Umwelt: COMBAT-RES: Predicting potent drug combinations by exploiting monotherapy resistance
  6. Nawroth, Janna, Helmholtz Zentrum München - Deutsches Forschungszentrum für Gesundheit und Umwelt: MecCOPD: Deciphering the roleof biomechanics  in chronic obstructive pulmonary disease
  7. Petit, Tristan, Helmholtz-Zentrum Berlin für Materialien und Energie: NANOMXM: Nanoscale Chemical Imaging of MXene Electrochemical Storage by Operando Scanning X-ray Microscopy
  8. Piazza, Ilaria, Max-Delbrück-Centrum für Molekulare Medizin in der Helmholtz-Gemeinschaft: proteoRAGE: Unravelling the pRotein Allosterome of Gene Expression
  9. Rohm, Maria, Helmholtz Zentrum München - Deutsches Forschungszentrum für Gesundheit und Umwelt: StopWaste:Targeting the crosstalk of lipid and glucose metabolism to stop cancer-associated wasting
  10. Runge, Jakob, Deutsches Zentrum für Luft- und Raumfahrt: CausalEarth: Advanced spatio-temporal causal inference for climate research
  11. Standl, Marie, Helmholtz Zentrum München - Deutsches Forschungszentrum für Gesundheit und Umwelt: ALLERGENE: Allergic multimorbidity from birth to young adulthood: determinants, epigenetic regulation  and inflammatory processes
  12. Tschaharganeh, Darjus, Deutsches Krebsforschungszentrum: CrispSCNAs: Dissecting the Functional and Therapeutic Impact of Somatic Copy Number Alterations (SCNAs)
  13. Urlaub, Morelia, GEOMAR Helmholtz Zentrum fur Ozeanforschung Kiel: PRE-COLLAPSE: Slow sliding of volcanic flanks as PREcursor to catastrophic COLLAPSE
  14. Wei, Pei-Chi, Deutsches Krebsforschungszentrum: BrainBreaks: DNA Breaks Shape Neural Genome Heterogeneity
  15. Willke, Philip, Karlsruher Institut für Technologie: MASSQCOT:Molecular and Atomic Spins on Surfaces for Quantum-COherent conTrol

In total, the ERC awarded 436 ERC Starting Grants this year, 88 of which went to Germany. The Starting Grants allow promising young researchers at the beginning of their independent career (2 to 7 years after the doctorate) to establish their own research group and are highly coveted: the success rate of the applications was around 13 percent. The ERC funds come from the EU Framework Programme for Research and Innovation, Horizon 2020.
