The Programme Advanced Engineering Materials focuses on the development of selected materials and technologies, from fundamental understanding to technological application. Major challenges are the realization of low weight, high mechanical performance, and the implementation of multifunctional properties. Materials having such properties are the key for saving natural resources, for improving energy efficiency—to save energy and reduce the carbon footprint—and quality of life. They are applied to various fields, particularly in the areas of transport, energy, chemical industry, and medicine.
To achieve these goals, continuous work along the full spectrum of basic research in materials development, modelling and characterization as well as in the process technologies for the up-scaling to application-relevant standards is necessary. Research is conducted in a unique combination of metal research, mechanics and polymer research. The programme is closely linked with the programme From Matter to Materials and Life of the research field Matter to realize in-situ characterization methods with synchrotron radiation and neutrons, which will provide unique insights into realistic process conditions.
