Challenge #65

Secure e-voting.

During the pandemic, people were increasingly voting online. However, this method of voting still carries risks. We are working to ensure that digital election results are protected from attacks and that every vote counts.

Free and secret elections are the indispensable basis of every democracy. But can voting even be safely carried out in a digital world? There are some promising approaches to this already, such as end-to-end verifiability, which make manipulations detectable.

However, many research questions are still open, for example:

  • How can the secrecy of the ballot be adequately safeguarded?
  • How can voters’ confidence in such methods be increased?
  • Can online tools increase voter turnout?

At the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT), we are therefore developing solutions for secure online elections. A multidisciplinary team is working to understand, explain, and mitigate its inherent risks as well as to advise institutions on how to implement e-voting.

Researchers are also investigating new digital forms of election and voting. For example, citizens in the future might use liquid democracy platforms to influence political decisions directly or to elect members of parliament. We ensure that such innovative solutions are designed to be legally compliant, transparent, auditable, and permanently protected against cyberattacks.
