Challenge #107

Data security for all Internet users.

Many security tools on the Internet still have vulnerabilities or are complicated to use. We therefore develop IT security technologies that are user-friendly and yet provide optimal protection of privacy.

Having a secure and private digital life is not easy. Even everyday tasks on the web, like sending emails or making online bank transfers, involve interaction with IT security in the form of passwords, cookie messages, or TAN apps, for example. Unfortunately, many IT security applications are not technologically mature, so they are simply bypassed, ignored, or not even used. Cybercriminals can take advantage of this by breaking into user accounts and stealing data or passing it on to third parties.

At the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT), we develop IT solutions that are easy to use and yet secure – for example tools, to help prevent phishing, i.e. attempts to obtain passwords and other personal data by fraudulent means. For our developments, we employ interdisciplinary research methods from the disciplines of computer science, engineering, law, and psychology. In this way, citizens will be safer on the Internet in the future, regardless of their IT skills.
