Energy System 2050 – A Contribution of the Research Field Energy

“Energy System 2050” is a joint initiative of the research field energy of the Helmholtz Association. Running until 2019, it is aiming at improving the concrete understanding of energy systems and at developing technological solutions for use by politics and industry.


Linking Centres and Programmes

The joint initiative “Energy System 2050” intensifies the networking of the eight participating Helmholtz centres and strengthens cooperation and exchange among the seven Helmholtz programmes of the research field energy. Thematically, the networking is organised through the five research topics (RT) of the initiative: Storage and Grids (RT 1), Bioenergy (RT 2), Hydrogen-based Energy and Resource Pathways (RT 3), Life-Cycle-Oriented Sustainability Analysis at System Level (RT 4), and Toolbox and Data Models (RT 5). These topics systemically connect and supplement the activities planned in the third period of programme-oriented funding (PoF III) of the Helmholtz Association.

From Research to Application

All participating scientists regularly meet in person for joint workshops to present and discuss research strategies. The intense exchange also and in particular benefits junior scientists. During the term of the “Energy System 2050” initiative, scientists report about progress and results of their work at four conferences. These conferences are also targeted at research and academia, politics and industry. One focus lies on research findings which, ideally, can be transferred straight into application, i.e. into concrete innovations.

Partners in Policy Advice

The “Energy System 2050” initiative is headed by the coordinator of the Helmholtz research field energy, Professor Dr. Holger Hanselka, while Professor Dr. Joachim Knebel and Dr. Wolfgang Breh and are managing the initiative. The Management Board of the research field energy is responsible for the work programme. Each of the research topics is handled by a dedicated team of experts. Two coordinators each have been nominated for the five research topics. All teams of experts work across centres and programmes. In addition, the initiative cooperates with industry and the ministries in developing prototypes and demonstrators ready for application. The overarching approach makes “Energy System 2050” a competent partner for policy advice.
