HELMHOLTZ UPDATE / February 2017

Dear readers

Despite its sparse population and adverse conditions, science and technology in Israel is one of the country’s most developed sectors. This is not only a result of large investments in research and development. What does this country provide to be so extraordinary in its scientific achievements and bustling start-up scene?

Adventure in the Ice! Two-and-a-half years from now, the research vessel Polarstern will depart on an adventurous expedition. For an entire year, the ship will drift through the Arctic, stuck in the pack ice. Read more about what the researchers hope to gain from this new approach.

Salt makes you thirsty. That’s a given, right? Up until now. Researchers tested this theory by monitoring the salt intake and hydrating levels in cosmonauts during a simulated mission to Mars. The results are not what you might expect.
