    Muons – a Magnetic Mystery

    Jülich, 7 April 2021 – For around 20 years, there has been a discrepancy between the theoretical predictions and experimental measurements of the muon magnetic field, indicating a possible error in our current physical understanding. A new calculation method with unprecedented precision has now taken the theoretical prediction closer to the previous experimental value. For the most part, the work involving scientists from Forschungszentrum Jülich was conducted using Jülich’s supercomputers. The research findings have now been published in the renowned journal Nature. They are particularly relevant, since the first results of a new US experiment aiming to determine the muon magnetic field with greater precision will be announced on 7 April.

    New viruses, new challenges

    HZI researchers Luka Cicin-Sain and Carlos Guzmán on future approaches to stop new pathogens more quickly. Viruses are small particles - about 1000x smaller than human cells - that exploit their host's metabolism to replicate.     DESY X-ray lightsource identifies promising candidates for COVID drugs

    A team of researchers has identified several candidates for drugs against the coronavirus SARS-CoV-2 at DESY´s high-brilliance X-ray lightsource PETRA III. They bind to an important protein of the virus and could thus be the basis for a drug against Covid-19. In a so-called X-ray screening, the researchers, under the leadership of DESY, tested almost 6000 known active substances that already exist for the treatment of other diseases in a short amount of time. After measuring about 7000 samples, the team was able to identify a total of 37 substances that bind to the main protease (Mpro) of the SARS-CoV-2 virus, as the scientists report online today in the journal Science. Seven of these substances inhibit the activity of the protein and thus slow down the multiplication of the virus. Two of them do this so promisingly that they are currently under further investigation in preclinical studies. This drug screening – probably the largest of its kind – also revealed a new binding site on the main protease of the virus to which drugs can couple.

    Pancake strategy for the win: Special heat treatment improves novel magnetic material

    Skyrmions – tiny magnetic vortices – are considered promising candidates for tomorrow’s information memory devices which may be able to achieve enormous data storage and processing capacities. A research team led by the Helmholtz-Zentrum Dresden-Rossendorf (HZDR) has developed a method to grow a particular magnetic thin-film material that hosts these magnetic vortices. A central aspect of this new method is the abrupt heating of the material with short, very bright flashes of light, as the international team, consisting of scientists from HZDR, the Leibniz Institute for Solid State and Materials Research Dresden, TU Dresden (TUD), and Chinese partners, describes in the journal Advanced Functional Materials (DOI: 10.1002/adfm.202009723).

    Tomography brings insights into the early evolution of bones

    Modern biology considers bone cells (osteocytes) as essential for bone development and health. However, when bone initially evolved some 400-million years ago, it did not contain bone cells. So why did bone cells evolve? Why was it so advantageous that most subsequent vertebrates have bone cells? A joint team of palaeontologists at Berlins natural history museum has now for the first time analysed these structures in 400 million-year-old fossils of marine life at unprecedentedly high resolution and in 3D.
