Prof. Dr-Ing. Jürgen Klenner

Professor Jürgen Klenner is senator of the Helmholtz Association for the research field Aeronautics, Space and Transport. He was formerly Senior Vice-President for Structure & Flight Physics in the Airbus Division of the European Aeronautic Defence and Space Company (EADS).

Klenner studied mechanical engineering at the Technische Universität Braunschweig. He then worked for the military aviation division of Messerschmitt-Bölkow-Blohm GmbH (MBB) in Augsburg as head of CFRP production from 1980 to 1984, going on to head the department of CFRP technology and production until 1992.

After the MBB was taken over by the Deutsche Aerospace AG (DASA) in 1989, Klenner was head of production at this Daimler-Benz subsidiary’s Augsburg plant from 1993 to 1994 and subsequently head of the engineering division “Structure technologies and testing” at the Airbus-Deutschland sites in Hamburg and Bremen from 1995 to 2001.

Following the formation of the European Aeronautic Defence and Space Company (EADS) in the year 2000 mergering the German DASA, and the French and Spanish companies Aérospatiale-Matra and CASA (later to be reorganised as Airbus Group in 2014), Klenner moved to the Airbus site in Toulouse from 2001 to 2008. Here, as Senior Vice-President for the engineering division, he also headed the Centre of Competence (CoC) Structure until 2004, and then, until entering retirement, the CoC Flight Physics.

In 2002 he was made honorary professor at Bremen University and lectures in aerostructure design and technology.

In 2008, in the second round of the Helmholtz Association’s programme-oriented funding, Klenner was head of the review panel for the programme “Aeronautics” and, in this capacity, a member of the Helmholtz Senate Commission “Aeronautics, Space and Transport”.

He was awarded the Médaille de l’Aéronautique by the French Minister for Defence in 2009. This order of merit honours outstanding achievements related to the field of aeronautics in France and is seldomly bestowed on foreign nationals.

Jürgen Klenner is a member of the German Society for Aeronautics and Astronautics (DGLR) and the French Air & Space Academy (AAE), and has sat on a number of committees such as the senate of the German Aerospace Center (DLR), and various councils, boards and advisory committees of the Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft, DLR, the German-Dutch Wind Tunnels DNW, and the European Transonic Windtunnels (ETW).

Since ending his professional career, Jürgen Klenner acts in an advisory capacity for the aerospace industry and for research institutions, and participates in the assessment and monitoring of German and European funding programmes for the field of aeronautics.

In private life, Klenner has been a pilot since 1968, flying gliders, powered aircraft and helicopters.
