Prof. Dr. Günter Blöschl

Günter Blöschl holds a diploma in civil engineering (1985) and a PhD in hydrology (1990), both from the Vienna University of Technology. In 1989 he was a research fellow at the University of British Columbia in Vancouver, Canada, followed by research positions at the Centre for Resource and Environmental Studies at the Australian National University in Canberra and at the University of Melbourne, Australia, from 1992 to 1994. After receiving a senior doctorate (Habilitation) in 1997 he held the position of Associate Professor of Hydrology at the Vienna University of Technology until he was appointed full professor in 2007. Since 2012 he has been Head of the Institute of Hydraulic Engineering and Water Resources Management at the Vienna University of Technology. Since 2014 he has also been Advisory Professor at Hohai University in Nanjing and, since 2017, Distinguished Visiting Professor at Tsinghua University in Beijing, China. In 2017 he was Visiting Professor at the University of Waterloo, Canada. From 2013 to 2015 he was the President of the European Geosciences Union (EGU). Professor Blöschl is best known for his research on floods, droughts and transport of matter in the landscape.

Günter Blöschl has received numerous awards and honours, such as the Robert E. Horton Medal from the American Geophysical Union, Washington DC (2015) and the International Hydrology Prize from the International Association of Hydrological Sciences, UNESCO and WMO (2013). He is a member of the German Academy of Science and Engineering, acatech. In 2011 he received an ERC Advanced Grant.
