Dr. Rainer Martens

Dr Rainer Martens is Senator of the Helmholtz Association for the research field Aeronautics, Space and Transport and was a member of the Board of Directors and Executive Board (COO) of MTU Aero Engines Holding AG.

He studied mechanical engineering at the Leibniz University Hanover and then worked as research assistant at the Institute for Manufacturing Technology and Machine Tools of the Leibniz University and at the Institut für Integrierte Produktion Hannover, a non-profit company closely linked to the university. In 1991, he received his doctorate (Dr Ing.) in Manufacturing Technology at Hanover University.

Beginning his career in the industry, he worked at the Airbus site in Varel, first as project manager and finally as head of the division for manufactoring of small parts. In 1997, he assumed the leadership of turbine blade production at the MTU Aero Engines AG in Munich. In 2002, he returned as production and site manager in Bremen to Airbus. During this time, the Airbus site in Bremen was modernized and considerably expanded. Among other things, the production of landing flaps was largely automated and the assembly for the fuselage of the military transport aircraft A400M was put into operation. At that time, also the high-lift systems for the A380 and A400M as well as the fuselage and cargo loading system for the A400M were designed and developed.

In 2006, he was appointed to the Board of Management of the MTU Aero Engines Holding AG in Munich, now a DAX-listed company. In this position, he was responsible for engine development including technology, engine manufacturing and engine overhaul, which also included the company's worldwide locations. During this time, MTU launched a new engine family and expanded its production capacities for engines and their maintenance worldwide. He was a member of the Supervisory Board until the end of 2017 and has since been working as an independent consultant.

As MTU's director of engineering, he was vice president of the German Aerospace Industries Association (BDLI) from 2006 to 2017 and senate member of the German Aerospace Center (DLR) from 2008 to 2014. Further, he is a member of the Board of Trustees of the Fraunhofer Institute for Production Technology IPT, Aachen.

In 2013, Rainer Martens was chairman of the review panel for the evaluation oft he Helmholtz programme ‚Aeronautics‘ and in this capacity he was a member of the Senate Commission for the Research Field Aeronautics, Space and Transport.

As an independent consultant, he holds supervisory board and advisory board mandates, is a volunteer in supervisory bodies of research institutions and participates in the evaluation and monitoring of German and European aviation funding programmes.
