Working in research
Some 30,000 staff work at the 16 Helmholtz Centres. Around 63% are engaged in research where they fathom out natural phenomena, drive forward technical developments and make important progress in biological-medical research. Their work creates the foundation for forward-looking findings, technologies and applications. Their commitment and dedication play a part in deciding how modern industrial nations develop in the future. In addition, the research centres contribute to meeting the constantly growing demand for qualified and technically-trained young scientists in the evolving global knowledge society, taking on a key position in this scenario. Their great scientific potential and outstanding infrastructure enable the centres to offer experienced researchers attractive working conditions, young academics the opportunity to gain further qualifications in research, and school-leavers the chance to complete traineeships and apprenticeships in a wide range of quality occupations. The Helmholtz Centres open up unique perspectives for committed staff and provide them with the opportunity to advance - in the field of applied development and basic research.
Promoting young scientists
As Germany's largest scientific research community with large-scale scientific facilities and instrumentation which serve as focal points for national and international research cooperation and as a driving force for high-tech developments, the Helmholtz Association offers young scientists outstanding working conditions and, through its cooperation with universities, also opens up opportunities for them to gain their own teaching experience. Postdoc programmes and junior professorships which involve joint appointments with the universities, sponsorship programmes with industry, as well as prizes and awards all serve to create an inspirational working environment for university graduates wishing to continue their careers in research.
International dimension
As a global player, Helmholtz offers scientists and researchers an international workplace. Worldwide exchange programmes and cooperation agreements ensure that the research is not only performed in Berlin, Leipzig or Munich, but also in Chicago, Toronto and Paris. Indeed, researchers will already find an international flair at the Helmholtz Centres in Germany. The outstanding research infrastructure, in some cases offering one-off large-scale scientific facilities in the world, attracts thousands of foreign scientists and researchers to Germany each year.
