At DESY’s school labs modern physics come alive. The institutes of the Deutsches Elektronen-Synchrotron DESY are located in Hamburg and Zeuthen near Berlin. Experimental vacuum laboratories are available to school classes at both sites. Hamburg also offers the additional topic of radiology.

Lab students – this is the name given to the young people taking part in the Life-Science Lab programmes at the German Cancer Research Center in Heidelberg. 15 billion years after the Big Bang and the creation of the universe you find out about the smallest particles of matter in the school lab at the Gesellschaft für Schwerionenforschung (GSI). Over millions of years the universe has been expanding constantly, cooling as it goes. In the process, the building blocks of atoms were created, then atoms, elements and finally, plants, animals and humans.
