Topic Transformation of Energy Systems

Energy system transformation towards sustainability

Currently, energy systems are regarded worldwide as non-sustainable. In the light of growing global energy demand the adaptation, expansion and modernisation of energy systems (energy supply, infrastructures and energy demand technologies) gain increasing importance. It is generally agreed that the transformation of existing energy systems into sustainable energy systems is inevitable.

Although there is consensus among the majority of scientists about the consequences of anthropogenically induced current levels of GHG emissions and limited energy resources, this is not the case with respect to sustainability targets, the role of energy technologies and appropriate incentives, as well as the requirements and the speed to restructure energy systems.

The topic follows an interdisciplinary approach focusing on energy systems analysis and technology assessment. Methodologically, this allows the analysis of the role of competing and/or complementary technologies, energy and climate policies, institutional settings, societal repercussions, economic aspects and requirements according to the concept of sustainability.

Central research questions

The transformation of the energy system towards a sustainable energy system faces partly contradicting challenges:

  • Energy technologies: What are the characteristics of sustainable energy technologies and infrastructures (e.g. grids, storage options, etc.) and what is the role of R&D for innovation and of investments?
  • Energy system: What are the main economic, environmental and social developments and drivers for the German energy system and what are the strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats for Germany in facing up to the challenges of sustainable energy?
  • Transformation of the energy system: What are the characteristics of a sustainable German energy system, which indicators do we need and how are the consistent transformation strategies for Germany characterised in a European context?
