Subtopic Integration of renewable sources of energy into supply systems

The currently existing, established computer models are poorly suited for modelling a future energy supply system having a large proportion of fluctuating and widely scattered renewable sources of energy. As a makeshift, a general upper limit to the contribution from renewables is often assumed, so as to take the limited handling capacity of the electricity grid into account somehow.

The objective of the studies is to record the potential of all renewable sources of energy to provide electricity in a high temporal and spatial resolution, for Europe and ten other regions of the world, using a GIS. On the basis of this complex collection of data, strategies for optimised market introduction of renewables on a large scale will be developed.
