The Senate of the Helmholtz Association approved the establishment of a new Helmholtz institute for renewable energy research at Erlangen and Nuremberg at its meeting yesterday. The new institute will be jointly run by Forschungszentrum Jülich, Helmholtz-Zentrum Berlin für Materialien und Energie (HZB), and Friedrich-Alexander-Universität Erlangen-Nürnberg (FAU). The Free State of Bavaria intends to fund a new research building for the Helmholtz institute and provide additional funding for its operation in the initial phase for five years. The Helmholtz Association will fund the new institute with € 5.5 million annually for staff, operation, and investments.
