Water Science Network for the future
The theme of water is central to many research projects relating to climate change, the growing global population, energy supply and health matters. The main focus lies on improving water quality and access to water, and ensuring sustainable water resources management, both on a regional level and worldwide. In the new portfolio theme Helmholtz Water Science Network, five Helmholtz Centres are working together with numerous university partners to contribute to solving these major challenges. The Helmholtz Association will provide over €21 million in funding for the project until 2015.

Flying over the three-dimensional Moon
Although the Moon is so far the only celestial body other than Earth on which a human being has ever walked, the topography of its surface has not been studied comprehensively. This is why NASA's Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter (LRO) has been orbiting the Moon since June 2009, using a wide-angle camera to digitally record its cratered surface.

Jülich Helps Transform the Energy Sector
In the Federal Government's Energy Concept, modern power plants play an important part in the future energy supply. In order to resolve the apparent contradiction between fossil fuels and climate protection, Jülich researchers are developing new types of gas separation membranes to capture the climate-damaging CO2 before it is emitted into the atmosphere.

Zeppelin NT Flies for European Climate Research
The test programme began in Friedrichshafen this week: Jülich climatologists are testing and optimizing the measuring equipment in preparation for the largest research application ever of a Zeppelin NT, starting in May 2012. At that time, the airship will undertake a number of flight missions, each lasting several weeks, coordinated by Jülich researchers. These missions aim to study the atmosphere over the Netherlands, Italy, the Mediterranean Sea, and finally Finland in 2013. The campaign is part of the EU’s PEGASOS project, in which 26 partners from 15 European nations are studying the relationships between atmospheric chemistry and climate change.
