Helmholtz Alliance on Systems Biology
The Helmholtz Alliance on Systems Biology is a joint initiative of several Helmholtz-centres and external partners and focuses on the elucidation of diverse complex disease mechanisms using a highly connected and interdisciplinary approach. The aim of the alliance is to use systemic approaches to promote the understanding of the causes of complex diseases and to develop new strategies for treating them.
Participating Networks and Centres
The Alliance consists of six interconnected networks focussing on a specific topic. Each network is led by a specific Helmholtz centre and contains close collaborations inside the Helmholtz association as well as with leading external institutions in the emerging field of Systems Biology.

Joint Technology Platforms
For the progression of systems biology, the production and integration of standardised information is inevitable. Therefore the Helmholtz alliance will concertedly expand existing experimental, IT and modelling techniques to provide an integrated efficient structure for all members of the alliance.

Training and Education
In order to promote the emerging discipline of Systems Biology, the Helmholtz Alliance will transfer its knowledge and experience into an educational program. Members will organize regular workshops, summer schools and will contribute to PhD programmes at the Helmholtz centres as well as to curricula at universities. The educational activities inside the alliance are coordinated by Prof. Dr. Hans-Werner Mewes, Helmholtz Zentrum München and Dr. Irina Lehmann, UFZ.
Alliance-Events
To promote systems biology research within and outside the alliance, regular scientific and educational events are organized, please see the following page for details:
Public Relations
The Helmholtz Alliance on Systems Biology is publishing systembiologe.de - the magazine for systems biology research in Germany. Together with other national research initiatives research highlights are explained to an interested public in an understandable manner.
The magazine can be ordered free of charge at www.systembiologie.de/en/magazine.html.
