Barroso Institutes new Council

In the view of José Manuel Barroso, President of the European Commission, science and innovation are the keys for Europe's future competitive capability. To create the right framework conditions for innovation, he has instituted a "Science and Technology Advisory Council". This council is to identify opportunities and risks resulting from scientific and technological progress and, at the same time, is to provide suggestions as to how these developments can be communicated in order to promote debate also throughout society. The new council has 15 members, including two German scientists: Prof. Ortwin Renn from the University of Stuttgart, Director of the Research Centre for Interdisciplinary Risk and Innovation Research, and Prof. Hans Joachim Schellnhuber, Director of the Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research.
