Hydrogen Generation without CO2 Emissions
The Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT) is a partner in a seminal project aiming at CO2-free hydrogen generation out of methane. Hydrogen is excellent for storing and transporting energy, yet so far its generation entails the emission of the greenhouse gas CO2. A so-called liquid metal bubble column reactor is scheduled to be built in the coming months. It is a column containing liquid metal, which can be heated to up to 1,000 degrees Celsius. When methane is injected, the gas rises and the high temperature causes it to disaggregate into its components hydrogen and carbon.
