In Brief
Starting Signal for FAIR
One of the world's largest research facilities is being constructed at the GSI Helmholtz Centre for Heavy Ion Research in Darmstadt: The international particle accelerator FAIR. The Parliamentary State Secretary Dr Helge Braun (German Federal Ministry of Education and Research) now has presented the facility with a notice of granting totalling 526 million Euro. With these funds, the construction work in the immediate neighbourhood of the GSI Helmholtz Centre for Heavy Ion Research now can begin. Already, 3,000 scientists and engineers from more than 50 countries are working on the development of FAIR accelerators and pertinent experiments. The building site has already been prepared and comprises 20 hectares in total.
