Research Award for Animal-Free Cancer Research

The association Doctors Against Animal Experiments Germany distinguished cancer researcher Dr Irina Nazarenko from the KIT Institute of Toxicology and Genetics and engineer Dr Stefan Giselbrecht from the KIT Institute for Biological Interfaces with their research prize for animal-free cancer research.

The two researchers receive the award for their modelling the growth of human cells on microstructured biochips, by which means they investigate the processes in breast cancer metastasis formation in bone tissue. The results of the project, taking place in the framework of the BioInterfaces programme, are to provide new approaches in controlling stem cell behaviour and towards innovative cancer treatments. In their cross-disciplinary project, Nazarenko and Giselbrecht combine methods from cell research and engineering.

With this award endowed with 10,000 Euro, the association Doctors Against Animal Experiments Germany recognises work in the field of cancer research that completely relinquishes the use of animals and animal materials. Even the nutrient media for cell cultures and antibodies are produced synthetically.
