Metabolism to Display Gender-Specific Characteristics
Research on the metabolic profile of blood revealed significant differences between men and women: This leads scientists at the Helmholtz Zentrum München to deduce a need for gender-specific treatments. The differences affect 101 of the 131 examined metabolic compounds in the blood serum in more than 3,000 test persons participating in the population study KORA - in particular fats, amino acids and esters.
For the purpose of their study, the scientists combined genetic data with metabolic profiles that were compiled on the metabolomics platform of the Genome Analysis Centre. The genetic investigation was headed by Prof. Dr Thomas Meitinger, Director of the Institute of Human Genetics. In a next step, the scientists will extend the number of examined metabolic compounds, yet also evaluate further studies by applying gender-specific aspects.
