Research Award for Animal Testing Alternative

The 2010 Research Award of the Federal State of Rhineland-Palatinate, endowed with 20,000 Euro, for promoting the research on substitute and augmenting methods for animal testing both in scientific research and in teaching goes to Prof. Claus-Michael Lehr, Dr Eva-Maria Collnot und Francisca Leonard. The scientists from the Saar University and the Saarbrücken Helmholtz Institute for Pharmaceutical Research Saarland (HIPS) have developed an alternative model by which they can examine chronic intestinal inflammation. The model could contribute towards reducing animal testing in this field in the future or even rendering it entirely obsolete.
