Distinguished Building
The Baden-Württemberg branch of the Association of German Architects (Bund Deutscher Architekten, BDA) distinguished the "Deutsches Krebsforschungszentrum Heidelberg, Neukonzeption" (German Cancer Research Centre Heidelberg, New Concept) project with the architecture award "Hugo-Häring Auszeichnung 2011". The award recognises the German Cancer Research Centre (DKFZ) as building owner and the independent architects Heinle, Wischer und Partner, Stuttgart for their joint achievement.
The German Cancer Research Centre's high-rise building was constructed in the early 1970 by the same architecture firm Heinle, Wischer und Partner. After the building's complete renovation, the DKFZ now since autumn 2010 has at its disposal one of the most modern biomedical research facilities. For the renovation of the German Cancer Research Centre's high-rise building, the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research contributed funds totalling some 70 million Euro and the Ministry of Science, Research and the Arts Baden-Württemberg contributed another 7 million Euro. The Hugo Häring Award at administrative district level is regarded as the first step in the selection process "Auszeichnungen Guter Bauten" (Awards Good Buildings) leading towards the federal state level Hugo-Häring-Landespreis für vorbildliches Bauen (Hugo Häring State Award for Exemplary Building) 2012. Since 1969, the Hugo Häring Award is awarded every three years to architects and building owners for their joint achievements.
The buildings thus honoured will furthermore be published in the documentation "Architektur in Baden-Württemberg, Band 10” (Architecture in Baden-Württemberg, Volume 10), which is released on occasion of the Hugo-Häring-Landespreis für vorbildliches Bauen 2012 award ceremony.
