New Material for Fast Data Storage Developed

HZB scientist Florin Radu inspects a BaTiO3 sample by means of the ALICE diffractometer. Photo: Helmholtz-Zentrum BerlinScientists from the Helmholtz-Zentrum Berlin (HZB), in cooperation with colleagues from France and the United Kingdom, have developed a material displaying both ferroelectric and ferromagnetic characteristics at room temperature, thus making it "multiferroic". For this reason, an electric field can also indirectly influence the magnetisation. more

Looking at Deeper Layers

The images show a cross-section through the electron distribution within tungsten. Source: Forschungszentrum Jülich/UC Davis/Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory/Univ. Erlangen-Nürnberg/Nat. Inst.... Physical properties of solid materials are based on electronic conditions inside the material. An international research team including the Research Centre Jülich now achieved investigation of these conditions in hitherto unfathomed depth. For their measurements the researchers from Germany, the USA and Japan used the well-established method of...more

Biofilms for Cancer Therapy

Electron microscope image of salmonella (red) within a tumour. The bacteria form colonies, so-called biofilms. This helps them to hide from the immune system and fight the cancer cells. Photo:...Salmonella not only make us sick – they also feature a characteristic that makes them very interesting for cancer medicine: The germs infiltrate tumours and kill tumour cells. Scientists from the Helmholtz Centre for Infection Research (HZI) now found out that salmonella bacteria form so-called biofilms within the tumour in reaction to assaults...more

Metabolism to Display Gender-Specific Characteristics

Research on the metabolic profile of blood revealed significant differences between men and women: This leads scientists at the Helmholtz Zentrum München to deduce a need for gender-specific treatments. Dear Readers,

Prof Jürgen Mlynek Portrait

Remodelling our energy supply requires great effort, both on part of research and of politics. Yet also end users are more aware than previously of the issues pertaining to their energy supply and its ecological and economic price and appraise the advantages and disadvantages of new technologies from their point of view. This also affects storage technologies, the further extension of networks, wind energy, solar energy parks or the utilisation of biomass. We therefore likewise need to investigate which innovations in this field have a chance of being accepted and how future infrastructures of energy supply could look like to safeguard a sustainable and socially acceptable energy supply system. To this end, four Helmholtz Centres, three universities and other partners now are pooling their competences in a new Helmholtz Alliance. The Helmholtz Alliance "Future Energy Supply Infrastructures" will investigate the various points of connection between technical and social factors and will develop strategies to ensure a successful transformation process. Wishing you enjoyable reading, Jürgen Mlynek, President
