Detecting Cancer Cells During Surgery

Photo: Helmholtz/FesselerProf. Jürgen Mlynek (left), President of the Helmholtz Association, and Prof. Andreas Schlüter (2nd from left), Secretary General of the Stifterverband Association for the Promotion of Science and Humanities in Germany, congratulate the awardees Prof. Vasilis Ntziachristos (2nd from right), Helmholtz Zentrum München, and Prof. Gooitzen Michell van Dam (right), University Medical Center Groningen. Photo: Helmholtz/FesselerIn the event of cancer surgery, the surgeons have to remove the cancer tissue as completely as possible without cutting away too much of the healthy tissue. This is a difficult task, for which they could only rely on their own eyes so far. Now researchers from the Helmholtz Zentrum München and the University Medical Center Groningen have developed an innovative imaging procedure by which even the tiniest amounts of cancer tissue can be detected during surgery. more

Washing Away Alzheimer's? A Vision for the Future

Mouse brain with Alzheimer plaques (in red) and microglia (brownish). The microglia try to clear the brain from beta-amyloid. However, the toxicity of beta amyloid also kills these cells or at least...In spite of remarkable progress in researching the Alzheimer's disease, to this day there is no effective treatment targeting the cause. A main characteristic of the disease are accretions, so-called plaques, composed of the protein amyloid beta, which are found posthumously in the brain of Alzheimer's patients. How about it then, if the formation...more

GFZ Researchers Build Water Monitoring in Kyrgyzstan

Construction of a hydro-meteorological station at Abramov Glacier, Kyrgyzstan. Image: GFZWater often is a scarce resource in Central Asia. Therefore it is all the more important to systematically gather data on the availability and use of water in order to forecast shortages and to develop solutions for future water management. However, the operation of hydrometeorology stations is extremely costly in particular in those remote high...more

Dear Readers,

Praesident Prof. Mlynek

Embarking on a scientific career can be risky and tedious. Yet research lives and breathes ideas, also those contributed by younger researchers. The Helmholtz Association gives these young scientists the chance to establish their own research groups. As head of a Young Investigators Group, they command an annual budget of 250,000 Euro over five years as well as the prospect of an unlimited work contract. This renders this position very attractive also on an international level, so that competition for it is accordingly intense: More than 200 applications from home and abroad, a third from women, were submitted to the Helmholtz centres for this current grant round. In the final round, the internationally staffed expert committee decided in favour of ten women and ten men, who in future will be able to conduct their research at Helmholtz centres. This time, the women have asserted themselves disproportionally and convinced the committee by their performance. This is an excellent basis for establishing more women in leading positions in the scientific world. I wish you a lot of fun reading!
