Wilhelm Conrad Röntgen Prize 2011 Awarded:

Dr Tobias Bäuerle has been awarded the Wilhelm Conrad Röntgen Prize 2011. The Deutsche Röntgengesellschaft (German Radiological Society) gave over the prize endowed with 10,000 Euro during this year's German Radiology Congress in Hamburg. Bäuerle heads the research group "Molecular Imaging" at the German Cancer Research Centre and works towards rendering visible processes within metastases of the bone without the need for devices entering into the patient's body (non-invasive method). As of a certain size, bone metastases trigger the creation of new blood vessels providing the metastasis with sufficient nutrients and oxygen. Bäuerle could show in the rat model that this new creation of blood vessels is linked to the destruction of the bone substance. His research allows for new approaches to improve the diagnosis and treatment of bone metastases. The Wilhelm Conrad Röntgen Prize recognises the work of Dr Tobias Bäuerle, which he has summarised in his habilitation treatise.
