Pesticides Not Sufficiently Accounted for in Water Pollution Control

Pesticides pose a greater problem than what has long been assumed. This is the result of a study including participation of the UFZ, which has evaluated data pertaining to 500 organic substances in the catchment areas of four large European rivers. The evaluation revealed that 38 per cent of these chemicals occur in such a degree of concentration, that effects on living organisms cannot be excluded. Most of these substances were pesticides hitherto not found on the European list of priority substances, which require regular monitoring. Therefore a revision of the list of chemicals the national authorities have to monitor according to the stipulations of the EU Water Framework Directive is urgently needed, the researchers write.
