Humboldt Professorship at the Helmholtz Zentrum München:
Prof. Dr Matthias Tschöp is the recipient of one of the four Alexander von Humboldt professorships announced today. Tschöp will head the Institute of Diabetes and Obesity at the Helmholtz Zentrum München. At the same time, he has been appointed Chair of Diabetes Research / Insulin Resistance at the Technical University Munich. Tschöp comes from the University of Cincinnati, Ohio, USA, and is one of the internationally most renowned experts for metabolic diseases. The two institutions are in the process of jointly establishing a research focus on diabetes for the development of prevention and treatment concepts to meet this enormous medical challenge: As the first non-infectious disease, diabetes mellitus was declared a world-wide threat to health by the World Health Organization of the United Nations in 2006. The goals of the Helmholtz Zentrum München include understanding the pathogenic mechanisms of diabetes mellitus and deriving new points of action for diagnosis, treatment and prevention.
