DKFZ Researcher Receives Ruprecht Karl Prize 2011:
Dr Matthias Baumhauer is one of five scientists receiving this year's Ruprecht Karl Prize. Baumhauer researches at the German Cancer Research Centre in the Division of Medical and Biological Informatics. He was awarded the prize for his draft design of a computer-based system supporting physicians during laparoscopic or minimally invasive surgery. The system helps to recognize and compensate movement of the organs in real time and renders hidden structures such as blood vessels or tumours visible. With the Ruprecht Karl Prize, the Foundation University Heidelberg recognises outstanding scientific publications by young scientists. Once a year, five scientific first works that are ready for publication are awarded, usually dissertations. The award is endowed with 5,000 Euro each.
